Camping in the Porkies: Union Bay Campground

Union Bay Campground is a modern campground located in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Without a doubt, this campground has some of the finest sunset and sunrise spots in the area.

Even in a modern campground, camping on the shores of Lake Superior in July can be risky. It’s prime black fly season and those guys bite hard. Luckily for us, it was towards the end of the season so the flies weren’t too bad and we could really enjoy the views. And the views are what this campground is all about.

With a beautifully layered sandstone shoreline and a west AND east facing view, campers get the opportunity to see some remarkable sunsets and sunrises. This was one of the reasons why we decided to book this campground.

Along with the view, the campground offers showers, electricity, modern bathrooms, and access to one of Michigan’s best parks. A camp store with minimal supplies (including coffee in the mornings) is located nearby and a camp host is available within the campground for information on the area, coffee, hot cocoa, and tea.

One of the major drawbacks of Union Bay, in my opinion, is the lack of trees. Some sites had a couple trees but most were open. While the camp spots are relatively large, there wasn’t much privacy between sites.

The lack of trees also makes this a not a hammock friendly campground.

Overall, Union Bay Campground is a decent modern campground for people who aren’t quite comfortable with rustic camping but still love to explore the great outdoors.

Reservations can be made online at DNR Reservations. Make sure to book early as this campground fills up quickly.
